Of the three amazingly great Toy Story movies, number two was always, always my favourite by a wide, wide margin. It is also the one we have viewed the most. By my estimate, Toy Story 2 has been enjoyed by us a total of 4,815,162,342 times. Or so.
This one picks up some time after the first and has Woody being toynapped by an unscrupulous toy dealer. Buzz organizes the other toys into a rescue party that embarks on an incredible journey. Meanwhile, back with Woody, he meets a bunch of other toys that form his posse. Err, complete set. Shenanigans and chaos again ensue. And this time, you must beware of Zurg!
One of the saddest songs I have ever experienced inhabits this film. When Somebody Loved Me by Sarah McLachlan will cause the tears to flow. It will also give you a massive guilt trip. The pain a certain toy exists in, that this song illustrates perfectly, makes you want to reach out and hug ’em. Truly heartbreaking.
Numerous additions are made to the Toy Story gallery in this edition. While the Prospector is interesting, and Bulleseye the horse really fun and kooky, they are not my favourites. Jessie the cowgirl, complete with her action packed yodel and daring do stunts, will cause you to cheer endlessly. In a word, Jessie Rocks.
Toy Story 2, besides being the best of the trilogy, is also the one chock filled with a literal gazillion riffs and references to other movies. I always lose count around 4,815,162,342, but I might be off a bit. Next time you watch, start your own count and see what you get. Betcha you can’t beat my numbers!
