For my Googliebear’s birthday this year, I decided to break format a little wee bit and feature a movie a bit different this time. This one is PG13! It has innuendo, nudity, and some slightly off colour humour.
It is Airplane! And it is one of her favourite movies.
The Complex Plot
Who cares? If you even try to follow this ludicrous crazy meandering parody of disaster movies, then you are totally and completely miss the point. Okay, for the anal-retentives, a despondent man must save a plane full of people. Happy now? Sheesh!
While this movie is chock full of stars, some new, and some elder statesmen of the drama genre, the real breakout star, decades into his career, is the one and only Leslie Neilsen. Canada’s native son of greatness virtually steals the show with the classic line (now repeat after me) :
Ted Striker: “Surely you can’t be serious.”
Dr Barry Rumack (Neilsen): “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.”
The Best Scene:
Amidst all the chaos and insanity this film offers, for me the best part is one of the gazillion flashbacks featuring the history of the main couples relationship. When we see how they met, in a dive of a bar, avoiding fighting girl guides, and burning up the dance floor with our hero sporting the greatest white leisure suit ever seen. Yes, even better than that one.
All these factors, and dozens more, add up to this being not only a classic, but one of my beloved’s favourites as well. So much so, she quotes lines back to me whenever we see it. And she is so cute when she does that.
