Superman’s 75th Birthday is this year, and I am taking a quick look at Krypton’s last son in different media. Right now I have before me the Superman Serials!
If you watch the early episodes, you can see the genesis of what becomes Smallville. Young Clark Kent does some derring-do rescues and gets excellent guidance from Ma and Pa Kent. Now this aspect ends quickly, shooting the rest of the story to Metropolis and beyond!
The amazing Kirk Alyn provides the Man Of Steel with the right amount of gravitas. The lovely Noel Neill makes Lois Lane a tough as nails reporter. Together they make action and adventure!
Superman was really late to the movie serial game, with these fifteen episodes being released in 1948, towards the end of the era for this art form. And in order to simulate flying, they took the amazing step and had those scenes be animated!
This serial was fast paced and wonderful. For a fun afternoon with kids, these are just as good as the Fleischer cartoons.

P.S. This post is one of several I hope to do this year to celebrate the 75th Birthday of Superman. Happy Birthday Kal-El! Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
P.P.S. Superman Man Of Steel opens Friday, June 14th 2013. For an indepth look at the creation of this landmark movie, check out Jeffrey Taylor’s columns.
