Three Random Thoughts On The 1988 Superman Cartoons

Superman Ruby Spears

With Superman’s 75th Birthday this year, I am celebrating the Last Son Of Krypton by checking him out in various other media.  This week we are jumping ahead to the Rudy-Spears Superman Cartoons from 1988!

Superman S SymbolTHE CHANGES!

Casual viewers would notice a change that long time fans already knew about.  With the Man Of Steel Reboot, Lex Luther was now a wealthy businessman, constantly plotting and doing nasty things to Kal-El.  Rich and evil is Luther’s new M.O.

Superman S SymbolMA KENTS PICTURES!!

One of the best segments in this show was the inclusion of the Superman Family Album.  Cute little vignettes about a young Clark Kent using his powers with much comedic results.  The supermarket segment was hysterical.

Superman S SymbolTHE TALENT!!!

The talented Marv Wolfman, writer of the Teen Titans, Crisis On Infinite Earths, and one of the architects of the Man Of Steel Reboot, was the head story editor for this series.  Fans can see his fingerprints all over this gem.

For the bit of the older child, this show is an amazing action packed adventure series that modernizes so many aspects of Superman.
