Superman’s 75th Birthday in this year! And as part of the celebration, I am looking at Kal-El in all types of media. Today the much maligned Superman Returns is my topic!
Director Bryan Singer wanted this film to be a sorta sequel to Superman Two and very much styles it this way. From the opening theme music to the crystalline Fortress of Solitude, this movie in a lot of ways is for all those fans who wished Superman Three and Four didn’t happen.
The big bone of contention for so many is the illegitimate son of Superman and Lois. Even with the questionable math, Supes being kinda stalkery, and Lois telling no one about the child’s parentage, this is probably the closest we will get to a “legitimate” child for the Super couple. But it is a pity how they do it here.
The highlight for so many fans is the grand, glorious return sequence of the Man of Steel. He saves a plane, from crashing, into a stadium, full of people, all with Lois Lane being bounced around inside the jet. Epic Coolness Here.
Superman Returns is not perfect, but still has several fun parts. The kids will like the action scenes and the adults will like the dramatic scenes. It is an interesting standalone in the life of Kal-El.
