We interrupt our regularly scheduled programing (seriously, moved a post for this) to jump over to the other side of the aisle and talk about one the most funnest, most coolest, and most family friendly new show of the year.
Yes, it is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Minor SPOILERS to follow.
Why It Is Fun?
This is a show which unabashedly embraces its comics and comic movies mythology and source material. It takes the fantasy escapist viewpoint of the genre, while still admitting it is in a real world setting, and just plays with it. These are humans playing in the realms of superheroes, they know the risks, but still plunge into it. Being part of that bigger world is kinda fun for them.
Why Is It Cool?
Geek references for the win! Whether is in story ones, like how the victims got their superpowers or the mention of Stark tower, of the more obscure ones, like name dropping of Journey Into Mystery or making you believe a car can fly. This show, unlike say the first season of Smallville, has no trouble admitting where it is from. Thank You Marvel!
Why Is It Family Friendly?
Because they want kids to watch as well, and hopefully then go read the comics, and cultivate a whole new generation of Geeks. The last time this task was attempted was with the Justice League cartoon, which was wildly successful. Marvel knows this series, spinning out of the phenomenal Avengers movie, is a gateway to greatness for the kids.
As a lifelong DC fan, I seriously tip my hat to Marvel for this show. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is truly excellent.
