Years ago DC Comics reintroduced Supergirl to their mythos with a storyline that re-established her as Superman’s Kryptonian cousin. Because of the acclaim that story arc had, DC made this animated film Superman Batman Apocalypse!
A rocketship crashes into Gotham harbour and out pops a teenage girl who does not speak English. After demonstrating unearthly powers, Superman and Batman figure out she is Kryptonian. This reveal brings Wonder Woman to show up, and more importantly, attracts the evil Darkseid.
Summer Glau as Supergirl is ultra cool. Tim Daly as Superman is amazing. Kevin Conroy as Batman is simply natural. Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman is sensational. The only misfire is the esteemed Andre Braugher as Darkseid. He feels like he is phoning it in somewhat.
You want an action packed, pummeling, smashing finale? This one has that. You want Supergirl and Superman giving Darkseid a good old fashioned whupping? Right here. The only thing you won’t have is the Kent farm in one piece at the end.
Superman Batman Apocalypse is a fun adventure and a great introduction to Supergirl for younger viewers. Adding Wonder Woman to the mix also ups the cool. If only they had added the lady’s names to the title as well.
