And here we begin my first regular real episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the start of My Year of Buffy. Let’s take a bite out of this one, shall we? And remember, as always, SPOILERS!
What Buffy Did!
Buffy Summers moves with her mom to the beautiful small town of Sunnydale. Apparently Buffy is a troubled girl who burned down her old high school’s gym, all because no adult knew it was filled with vampires. Buffy meets Willow, Xander and Cordelia, and most importantly, her new watcher Giles, who is pretending to be the school librarian. Buffy also meets mysterious stranger Angel who speaks in annoying beware language. By the end of the episode, Buffy fights several vampires in front of some of her new friends, only to get her ass kicked by one really tough vampire.
Cordelia and the Principal must die now, if not sooner. I will even pay to see this happen. And how frakking clueless is Buffy’s mother? I was very surprised they even slightly, in a very roundabout way, referenced the movie. Maybe Joss still wanted to honour whatever fans existed for that trainwreck, which is quite nice of him. This episode also features two genuine scares for me, creating actual jumps, and reassured me that Joss has far more control here. And don’t even get me started on that OMG cliffhanger…
Joss is known for dialogue on his shows, and right away I can tell why. Funny bits and characters bits pepper this episode, giving me a hearty smile. Xander tentatively asks an escaping Buffy “Hey, hey, you forgot your stake,” and was followed later by “The only thing I can think is that you are building a really little fence.”
Well we are off to a quite refreshing start with this stellar pilot. This one episode more then makes up for that atrocious movie. Bravo Joss!
