Buffy The Vampire Slayer has a school event turn deadly in The Puppet Show. My Year of Buffy is, of course, SPOILER FILLED.
What Buffy Did!
A creepy intro leads to the tryouts for the Sunnydale High School Talent Show, which features Giles, forced by the strange new Principal, into running it. The Scoobies mock the show, get caught, and are forced into it. A student with a dummy act creeps Buffy out, and the puppet seems to be alive-ish or so. A contestant is found brutally murdered, prompting debate amoungst the Scoobies as to whether it is Hellmouth related. While investigating, they think it is the dummy act, and Buffy gets into trouble with the new Principal. The dummy tells the teen that Buffy is “the one.” The dummy sneaks into Buffy’s room one night, freaking her out and causing taunts from the Scoobies the next day. Later, Buffy finds the student dead, and realizes the dummy is actually a demon hunter trapped in a wooden body. Turns out, the magician act is actually the killer demon and Giles is his intended victim. A fight destroys the demon and frees the soul of the hunter from the dummy, and is viewed by the Talent Show audience as something avant garde. Buffy, Willow and Xander later perform part of a play in the Talent Show, very horribly.
Giles looks absolutely terrified of Cordelia singing! I think he would rather fight a demon or two. I would pay good money to have a whole episode where Cordelia just babbles to Giles. And right after that, she would die. So this new Principal, Snyder is a complete jerk, is creepy, and makes my skin crawl. Again, the Scoobies treat Buffy like she is an idiot for voicing her theories. With a Hellmouth underneath you, is any weird thing off the table? Xander should never perform with a dummy, ever. Okay, now for the plot twist of the dummy actually being the good guy. I really liked this idea and think they pulled it off wonderfully. You really feel for the dummy, and his death was very emotional. You Will Feel Sad That A Puppet Has Died.
Buffy says so much to Willow with the bit, “Their really wasn’t a story there.” Yes, I have a strange sense of humour. The new Principal shows he knows the score of Sunnydale with this line to Giles, “That’s the kind of wooly thinking that leads to being eaten.” But Willow gets the win with “Once again I am banished to the demon section of the card catalog.”
Except for the Scoobies being jerks to Buffy, I really liked this one alot. Very creepy, with great pacing, writing, and acting. That dummy got to me, darnit.
