Buffy and the Scoobies have a nice, quiet, relaxing Thanksgiving. Yeah right, Angel shows up in an episode called Pangs! All part of my SPOILER filled My Year of Buffy!
What Buffy Did!
Buffy is staking Vampire while on patrol and knows someone in watching. Turns out it is Angel. The next day, the Dean is making a speech and the ground is being broken on some new University building. And Xander is working the construction crew. Buffy, Willow, and Anya are watching and Anya goes on about how hot Xander is, while Buffy talks about Thanksgiving. Xander digs and falls through the ground and into some old underground building. And some spirit called Hus gets free and craves revenge. Joyce will be away for Thanksgiving so Buffy wants it at Giles place with the Scoobies. Spike looks like crap as he attempts to evade the Initiative. Xander is found by Anya looking really really sick and she starts nursing him. Green mist from the underground and enters the Cultural Center, finds a knife and becomes a Native American. It then kills the curator. Buffy and Willow investigate and notice the curator is missing an ear, and that the knife is missing. Giles researches the Native American tribe and Angel shows up. Angel’s friend Doyle had a vision of Buffy in trouble. He is here to help, but does not want to Buffy to know. Willow is found by Angel. Spike sees Harmony for blood, but she kicks him out. Spike comes to Giles’s place and wants help. He tells them about the neutering he has gone through and that he has information on the Initiative. They finally let him in. The Native American spirits attack Giles place with Buffy, Giles, and Spike inside. Spike is tied to a chair and keeps getting hit by arrows. Angel meets up with Willow, Xander, and Anya as they head back to Giles. Everyone ends up at Giles place, fighting the spirits with Angel keeping himself hidden from Buffy. Buffy stabs on of the spirits with their own knife and realizes this can hurt them. The spirit becomes a bear and Buffy fights it and stabs it. This makes all the spirits vanish. Angel quickly leaves. During Thanksgiving dinner, Xander lets out by accident that Angel was here.
This guy looks so alone. Buffy! And he’s a Vampire! Is she being watched? She can tell. Angel! Lurking in the bushes! Really boring shovel breaking ground ceremony. Anya! Another new job for Xander, this time, construction. Anya is so unshockable, just talking up Xander sex like that. And Willow knows the true meaning of Thanksgiving. So how long till Xander digs up something demonic? That didn’t take long. Welcome to the Smallvile caves, slightly nicer. Angel stalking part two. The Old Sunnydale Mission, thought lost in 1812 earthquake. And Buffy can sense Angel is nearby, lurking. Buffy wants to do her own Thanksgiving dinner. Poor Spike, looking despondent and being hunted by the commandos. Had a feeling Prof Walsh was Riley’s mother. Xander looks sick, all because of the Mission. Xander called Anya girlfriend. And that made her happy. Look out for the Kryptonite mist! And know it’s a Native American, which kills this poor Prof. And finally Buffy tells Giles about these goings ons. Angel was there?!?!?!? And Buffy sensed it. Giles and Angel, working together, uneasily, to protect Buffy. Spike looks like some poor urchin from Dickens, unable to feed. Riley! And Willow is so cute and obvious with cutting out on Buffy and Riley. That’s right Angel, scare Willow and me. Will all the Scoobies know but Buffy that Angel is in town? Cordelia shutout! And Angel sees Riley. Riley did grow up in a Grant Wood painting. Harmony! And she has read self help books. Wait, she can read? She pulled a stake! Spike is gonna be living under a bridge soon. Buffy versus a Native Spirit! That is one big murder of crows. Buffy is the politically correct one with Giles? Thought it would be Giles. Metropolis mention! Willow has lots and lots of books. All about atrocities with Natives. Native American History 101 of how the Colonials treated them lessons. And the wolf is watching from the window. Must be a real Thanksgiving, since the family are all arguing. Love how Giles is shocked that Willow knows about Angel. Xander and Anya! Xander is still sick. Keep stirring Buffy! A Witch spell for VD? Ooops! Xander insults vengeance demon and Anya takes offence. Let’s All Argue! Buffy is pulling a Monica here from Friends. Spike! Sizzling Spike! Love how Giles just hands her the stake. First time we have seen the magic restriction against entering houses without permission shown this way, like a forcefield. Spike is so desperate here, is this where he becomes a Scooby? Tying Spike to a chair is sensible and funny. Buffy sure can multi-task, cooking instruction and Willow logicating. Spike is very honest and brutal and funny here about Willow’s viewpoint. And Giles is annoyed because he said the exact same thing. What does happen when a Vampire doesn’t feed? They become emancipated. Native Spirit attack! With Spike in the line of fire! Anya should never do the questioning in the future. Angel! Now Xander knows. Angel meet Anya. Anya meet Angel. Stealing bikes. And Giles answers the phone in the midst of battle. Almost says Angel as well. Spike makes a great arrow pin cushion, really laughed at that. So is Giles place like the homestead under siege? The cavalry is coming on bikes! And now the Three Stooges fighting. They don’t die! Angel snaps like a boss! Giles’s head has gotta hurt from that wall whacking. Their own knife can kill them! Buffy versus a bear is different, even for this show. And now they are gone. And Giles place is only slightly trashed. And Angel skulks away. What a nice Thanksgiving dinner. And then Xander opens his mouth that Angel was here. Love Spike’s smile.
Buffy tells Willow and Anya how cool Xander looks with, “Oh, very manly. Not at all Village People.” Anya misunderstands Thanksgiving and says to Buffy and Willow, “I think that’s a shame. I love a ritual sacrifice.” Willow knows what Giles wants to do, “I think you just want to slay the demon then go la la la.” Spike informs Giles of his little problem, “I’m saying is that Spike had a little trip to the vet and now he doesn’t chase the other puppies anymore.” Angel has the following conversation with the Scoobies, “I’m not evil again. Why does everyone think that?” Spike tells Buffy the obvious with, “A bear! You made a bear!” And Xander spills the beans on Angel being in town, right bin front of Buffy at dinner, “Yeah, especially with Angel being here and everything.”
I found the afterschool special tone to the first parts rather droning and repetitive. It was not till the fight at the homestead did anything feel fun or interesting. But bonus points for the Angel guest appearance!
