Buffy has to help Riley survive The Initiative in Goodbye Iowa. Yet another amazing chapter of my SPOILER filled My Year of Buffy!
What Buffy Did!
Buffy tells the Scoobies about The Initiative and they wonder whose side Riley is on. And they all hide out in Xander’s basement. Riley goes to Giles to ask Buffy stuff, and sees Spike and gets annoyed. Adam escapes The Initiative. He sees a boy playing and talks to him. Walsh’s body is found. And Forrest accuses Buffy. The news reports the boy Adam was talking to is now dead. And Buffy thinks it was the Polgara demon and starts hunting it. Riley does the same. They soon met up and argue. And Buffy is told Walsh is dead. Willow gets Tara’s help to use a spell to find the demon, but Tara sabotages the spell. Buffy goes to Willy’s bar for info, and Riley shows up acting a jerk. He gets worse and threatens an old lady. Knowing Riley is sick, Buffy takes him to Xander’s. Riley wakes up and charges after Buffy. Buffy and Xander pretend to be scientists and get into The Initiative. They find out the commandos are having withdrawals from the drugs Walsh was secretly giving them. At Willy’s bar, Spike is beaten up by demons because of all the demons he beat up. Buffy tries to get info on 314 and Riley shows to help. Adam kills and shows up. Adam wants answers about his existence. And he babbles that he and Riley are brothers. A fight happens, Riley is hurt, and Buffy realizes Adam is more powerful than her. And Adam escapes. Forrest shows and takes Riley for treatment. Later, Buffy says to Willow of how dangerous Adam is. Riley is in the hospital clutching Buffy’s bandana.
Buffy is in all recap mode with the Scoobies, with Spike casting aspersions onto Riley. Scooby mention! And Giles is on the case! Riley is in the credits! Where to hide? Where to hide? And Riley walks in. Thank you Anya for stating the obvious. And Riley sees Spike, umm, subject 17. Spike leaving in daylight is so Spike. Riley is one confused soldier, and he is acting like a jerk. Hello Frankenstein Monster! Is he gonna kill the kid? Time for Riley to pull an Angel and walk around all mopey. So Giles did decide to hide at Xander’s, along with the rest of the Scoobies. Road Runner! These are such cranky roommates. Anya is very very one track mind with Xander. Damn, the boy was killed. Just realized this soldier played Dr Chris Hughes on As The World Turned. So this idiot thinks it was Buffy? So will these soldiers break orders and go after the demon? Even if they never broke orders before? Of course! Spike hid that fast? Yeah, a guy dressed in military garb in broad daylight would not draw attention. Riley being a jerk, part two. Willow and Tara! Willy’s bar! Haven’t seen this guy in a long time. Love that Vampire who just leaves in a pissy huff. Riley really really needs to switch to decaf. He pulled a gun on the “old lady?” Riley is losing it big time. Is it PTSD or something else? Buffy’s hairband turns into Riley’s bandage. I don’t know why, but this feels so seventies and Viet Nam. Xander’s disappeared military training is mentioned again. Aww, Willow and Tara are doing a spell together. And Tara cheated? What the? Hey Buffy, glasses are the perfect disguise, just ask Clark Kent. Knew Riley was gonna take off. It’s the vitamins! Riley’s in withdrawal. Spike! Spike in Willy’s. Spike in Willy’s ordering a non monkey drink. Poor Spike, now he gets punched out. Riley took the cameras out? Smart move. Walsh went nutso. And now Riley is going nutso. Okay, Adam came back. Hello patchwork demon. Okay, Walsh was not Riley’s mother. Adam is strong! And he just stabbed Riley! Now they shoot the door? Hello jerkwad soldiers! Spike just got his butt really really handed to him, all because he made violence on demons. Meanwhile, at the military hospital, Riley is holding on to Buffy’s hairband.
Willow schools Buffy on what is real with, “I know Buf, that’s why they call them cartoons, not documentaries.” Xander makes fun of Buffy’s faith in Riley with, “I totally get it now, can I have sex with Riley too?” Buffy tells Willow why she is helping Riley with, “He’s all alone. He has nothing to hold on to.”
Make Peace, Not War! Definitely felt the Viet Nam vibe to all this. And the fact the soldiers were drugged is really no surprise. Darn good building the momentum here.
